The South Dakota State University Dairy Science Department is hosting a meeting today for dairy producers with Karen Caco, a Florida attorney who is an expert on immigration. Caco, along with SDSU Dairy Science staff, will take questions from 1-3 p.m. on hiring qualified employees and how producers can verify employee eligibility.
The meeting is free and takes place at the SDSU Dairy Science Department conference room. It is open to all dairy or agricultural producers who may seek to hire employees on their farms.
Alvaro Garcia, SDSU Extension dairy specialist, says that while operators and their families provide most of the labor on South Dakota's small dairy farms, nearly all the larger dairies in the state are family farms that grew and now rely extensively on hired labor.
"On average, smaller operations have at least two full-time employees, most medium-sized dairies about three, and most large-sized dairies four or more full-timers. Even with competitive wages, producers can struggle to find workers who are willing to put in the long, hard days required to make a dairy operation successful," he says.
Today's dairy producers are expected to be excellent managers of their cows, stewards of the land, and producers of high-quality, wholesome products. They are also expected to recruit qualified employees for their dairy, and verification of the eligibility of these employees is an added responsibility, Garcia says.
"That's why we are having Karen Caco coming to campus to help producers with the complex questions they may have on hiring, determining eligibility, and other topics that they may face as they seek to grow their operations and in doing so must hire the hard-working staff to make growth succeed."
